GeoTag for MAC
Free, open-source Mac app that adds location tags to photos: pick images, click a spot on the map and GeoTag writes the GPS data.
GeoTag Overview
GeoTag is a free Mac app for adding or fixing the location stored in your photos. You select one or more images, pan and zoom a map to the place they were taken, and click: GeoTag sets that location for the selected photos. Click somewhere else to change it, or zoom in and click again to fine-tune it. When you save, the built-in ExifTool writes the location into the image metadata only, so the pictures themselves are not touched and the location can be changed as often as you like.
GeoTag can also update the location of images in your Photos Library; for those it uses Apple's Photos framework, and the original file is not changed. It is made by Marco S Hyman and is free and open source under the MIT license; the same free app is also on the Mac App Store. Version 6.1 adds thumbnail scaling, treats sidecar files as overrides to the image metadata and updates ExifTool to 13.59. GeoTag 6 runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and needs macOS 26 Tahoe or later; GeoTag 5.7 is offered for macOS 15 Sequoia and 4.15 for older systems. Some known issues are listed by the developer, such as sidecar files in the darktable naming format (file.ext.xmp) not being recognised.
Key Features
GeoTag puts your photos on the map.
- Click to tag: set the location of selected photos with one click on the map.

- ExifTool built in: only metadata is written, image pixels stay untouched.
- Photos Library: update locations of images in your library too.
- Folders: drag in a folder to add all its images and subfolders.
- Sidecar files: sidecar metadata is read as overrides to the image.
- GPSStatus option: a setting to respect the GPSStatus tag.
- Universal: runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

- ExifTool 13.59
- Fix: location changes are no longer reported when a map control is clicked
GeoTag FAQ
Is GeoTag free?
Yes. GeoTag is free and open source under the MIT license. The same free app is also available on the Mac App Store.
What does GeoTag do?
It adds or changes the location stored in your photos. You select images, find the place on a map and click, and GeoTag saves the GPS position in the image metadata.
Does GeoTag change my image quality?
No. GeoTag uses the built-in ExifTool, which modifies only the metadata, so the image data is not changed and the location can be edited any number of times.
Do I need to install ExifTool separately?
No. ExifTool is built into GeoTag; version 6.1 includes ExifTool 13.59.
Can GeoTag edit photos in my Photos Library?
Yes. For images in the Photos Library it uses Apple's Photos framework instead of ExifTool, and the original image file is not changed. The developer notes that Photos Library images cannot always be displayed, which appears to be an Apple issue.
Which macOS version does GeoTag need?
GeoTag 6 needs macOS 26 Tahoe or later. GeoTag 5.7 is available for macOS 15 Sequoia, and GeoTag 4.15 for earlier versions of macOS.
Does GeoTag run on Apple Silicon?
Yes. GeoTag is built for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
Does GeoTag support sidecar files?
Yes. Since version 6.1 sidecar metadata is treated as overrides to the image metadata. Sidecar files named in the darktable format (file.ext.xmp) are not recognised yet.
Can I install GeoTag with Homebrew?
Yes. Run brew install --cask geotag.
